Summer is considered Pitta season in Ayurveda—hot, bright, sharp, and full of movement. As the days grow brighter, we naturally feel a rise in energy. We want to move more, socialize more, stay up later, travel, and soak in every bit of sunshine we can. Backyard BBQs, beach days, camping trips, and patio drinks all become part of the rhythm of the season.
But with all this fun comes a subtle cost. The combination of heat, irregular routines, alcohol, and long days in the sun can leave us feeling depleted, irritable, overheated, or overwhelmed. Our liver and digestion work especially hard during this time. Luckily, Ayurveda offers simple, supportive ways to enjoy summer fully without sacrificing your balance or your joy. While seasonal routines shift throughout the year, many Ayurvedic staples remain steady anchors to help keep us grounded.
Move Your Body — But Mind the Midday Heat
As our internal energy rises, we often feel inspired to exercise more. Movement is wonderful in summer, but the midday sun is at its strongest and can quickly deplete Pitta. In winter, midday movement is ideal because we want the warmth. In summer, it’s the opposite.
Try shifting your walk, run, or yoga practice to early morning or later evening, when the air is cooler and the sun is gentler. This supports stamina and prevents overheating.
Travel, Vacations & Routine
Summer travel can throw off our regular rhythms, leaving us feeling ungrounded or experiencing digestive changes. Ayurveda teaches that when you eat is more important than what you eat because digestion follows the sun’s natural cycle.
Even when you’re BBQing or picnicking, try to keep meals around your usual times. Support your liver by adding a simple green salad or grilled summer vegetables like zucchini, celery, beets, or carrots. These foods naturally contain electrolytes and help keep digestion steady.
Beach Days & Hydration
Beach days are one of my favourite parts of living on the East Coast. But overheating and dehydration can sneak up quickly. In Ayurveda, sweating is considered a loss of vital fluids, so replenishing minerals is essential.
Water is important, but electrolytes are crucial. Try cooling, hydrating options like:
● Coconut water
● “Ayurvedic Gatorade”: lime, a pinch of pink salt, and a few slices of ginger (omit ginger if you’re already feeling hot)
● Rice water with jaggery
● Buttermilk (Takra)
Cooling fruits also help replenish minerals: cantaloupe (high potassium), grapes (hydrating + cooling), pineapple (potassium + digestive enzymes), and oranges (electrolytes + hydration).
Alcohol & Summer Heat
Alcohol is inherently heating, and in Pitta season that heat accumulates quickly. This can strain the liver, aggravate digestion, and increase irritability or dehydration. Ayurveda doesn’t forbid alcohol—it simply encourages balancing the qualities.
Cooling Additions
These options help buffer heat and support hydration:
● Pomegranate juice
● Blueberry juice
● Melons (eat at least 1 hour away from other foods)
● Coconut water (choose a clean, no‑additive brand)
● Fresh berries added to hard alcohol
● Real‑fruit slushies for a cooling twist
Mocktail‑Style Ideas
If you want the ritual without the heat:
● Diluted pomegranate juice (surprisingly similar to wine)
● Pomegranate spritzer with high‑quality sparkling water
● A splash of pomegranate juice added to wine to soften its heating qualities
These small adjustments help keep Pitta steady while still allowing you to enjoy summer gatherings.
Summer invites us to expand, explore, and enjoy life more fully. With a few simple Ayurvedic shifts—cooler movement times, consistent meals, liver‑supportive foods, and mindful hydration—you can celebrate the season without burning out. Ayurveda isn’t about restriction; it’s about staying connected to your body’s signals so you can savour every beach day, BBQ, and adventure with clarity, energy, and ease.
